VA Palo Alto Health Care System

Welcome to the Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Service at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System!

VAPAHCS Building 100 The VA Palo Alto Health Care System has been recognized repeatedly as one of the top-performing VA hospitals in the country, and Anesthesiology has played a major role over the years with a long tradition of outstanding clinical care, research productivity, and administrative service. Major paradigm shifts in anesthesiology and general medicine have resulted from the pioneering efforts of anesthesiologists at the VAPAHCS in exploring patient care simulation, pharmacology of drugs, analgesic and anesthetic mechanisms, and toxicity of anesthetic medications.

Dr. Ed Mariano, Chief of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Service The Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Service is made up of physicians, advanced practice nurses, respiratory therapists, anesthesia technicians, and administrative staff. Despite a diversity of backgrounds and training, we remain a close-knit group with similar interests in improving patients' well-being, providing the best educational experience for our trainees, and investigating innovative ideas to further enhance the services offered to our Veteran patients by promoting new research discoveries in basic science and clinical investigation.

As the new Chief, it is my privilege to follow in the footsteps of the trailblazers who came before me and to serve the talented men and women that make up the Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Service at the VAPAHCS today. My responsibility is to empower this group to build on a long-standing tradition of excellence and maintain its rightful place on the forefront of perioperative care.
