Local Veteran artists Michael Rogan, Kerry Hiroshi Paul and Gail Matthews won first place in the 28th Annual Creative Arts Festival on March 5, at VA Palo Alto Health Care System’s Menlo Park division. Over 104 Veterans competed in various categories ranging from visual to performing art. Winners were selected by a jury of three judges from the community and will go on to compete nationally in Milwaukee, WI.

The Department of Veterans Affairs used creative art therapy as a form of rehabilitative treatment to help Veterans recover from and cope with physical and emotional disabilities. At VAPAHCS, various classes and workshops are offered at various facilities within the health care system by art therapists as part of the Recreation Therapy Service.

The National Veterans Creative Arts Festival will be held this fall starting October 27 through November 2, hosted by the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. Approximately 120 Veterans will exhibit their artwork or performance in a gala variety show. Admission is free and ticket information will be available after September 1, 2014 on the national festival’s website.
