A Message from VAPAHCS Director and Police Chief

VAPAHCS Director Thomas J. Fitzgerald III and Police Chief Martin Sizemore

VAPAHCS Director Thomas J. Fitzgerald III and Police Chief Martin Sizemore

Monday, June 8, 2020

There is no denying 2020 has been a tough year and we’re just into June. However, VA Palo Alto Health Care System has remained a rock for our Veterans amid the chaos that surrounds us.

As we slowly move forward with updating our COVID-19 operational status, our country is faced with civil unrest surrounding the police involved death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN. Our heartfelt condolences are expressed to Mr. Floyd’s family, friends, and all lives he touched. We hope peace, justice, unity and positive change are birthed from this tragedy.

Worldwide protests are clinching the hearts and souls of many – including right here in our community. We have received inquiries from staff and area residents about protesting on VA Property. Please note that such demonstrations are not allowed on any Federal property.

Here at VAPAHCS, we proudly serve all who served and understand diversity is our strength. The entire workforce is committed to calling out racial injustice and facilitating open, honest and sincere conversations, which will promote healing and reformation.

VA Police are monitoring all VAPAHCS sites and surrounding areas to ensure the safety and well-being of our staff and Veterans. Police Chief Martin Sizemore has released a statement on behalf of his force, which you can read here.

As a reminder, if you are in any way struggling with stress, emotions, or concerns surrounding the killing of George Floyd, the ongoing civil unrest in our communities, COVID-19 response, or any other matters, please avail yourself to the following resources below:

All Veterans, including myself, have served honorably so that every American can access our nation’s inalienable rights: Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. To move forward, we all must have open ears, hearts, and minds. Please know that your service to this country gives us purpose and we are committed to positive growth, change and service.
