VA Palo Alto Health Care System has thousands of volunteers that help at almost every site of care. Every year, VA National Salute to Veteran Patients Week is celebrated the week of Valentine’s Day as a time to spread the word about how important community support is to our Veterans.

Last week, VA Palo Alto Health Care System hosted the current Miss California, Jessa Carmack, at its Palo Alto, Livermore and Menlo Park Divisions. Shorty the Clown, who brought a lot of laughter along the way, accompanied her as she visited Veterans on their way to appointments, in residential programs and hospice units.

She even dropped by for an impromptu visit to the busy infusion center where Veterans were receiving their regular chemotherapy treatments or other infusion needs.

Her visit is symbolic of the huge amount of respect and support offered by our local community every day. Whether volunteers are helping with special projects or escorting Veterans to their appointments, every effort given to help our Veterans goes a long way.

Remember, you do not have to wait for the next Salute Week to show your appreciation. We accept volunteers for regular assignments and even one-day events. Stop by the Voluntary Service Office at your nearest facility or visit our Volunteer page to find out the different ways you can help!
