Live Healthy

All About Advanced Directives

Have you thought about what medical treatments you want in the event you can’t make decisions for yourself? Advance Directives are the best way to make sure your medical wishes are respected. Come to this one-hour class hosted by Social Work to work through your plan.

Dates and Times:
San Jose - last Friday of the month, 10:00-11:00 a.m.;
Palo Alto - 3rd Friday of the month, 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.;
Livermore - by request only;
Stockton - Weekly on Friday, 9:40-11:00 a.m.;

Anticoagulation Patient Education Class

Are you taking anticoagulation medications? Do you want to know more about what they are and what to expect while you are taking them? This one-hour class taught by a pharmacist will answer all of your questions.

Currently teaching in Palo Alto. Talk to your PACT Team or Pharmacist to schedule.

Better Choices, Better Health

If you are living with a chronic condition, this peer-led workshop can help you take back control of your life. These Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshops (Stanford developed) meet for 2.5 hours every week for six weeks. Learn important self-management skills, set goals that matter, and identify ways to solve problems. This workshop is offered at multiple sites.

Call (650) 493-5000 x69273 for more information; have your primary care team put in a referral for your class scheduling. Once the referral is placed, clinic staff will call to schedule for a class date.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Presentation Series

Learn about yoga, tai chi, acupuncture and other alternative therapies to help you manage conditions and become healthier. This information class about resources at the VA and in the community meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in Bldg. 7C (Temporary Building) at Palo Alto.

Diabetes Education Series

Diabetes 101

Whether you are just beginning to manage your diabetes or are seeking a refresher, join this two-part class to learn helpful ways to manage day-to-day issues and control your diabetes. Discuss helpful steps you can personally take and get your questions answered.

Diabetes 102

When you have diabetes, keeping your blood glucose (sugar) in control can be challenging. This class focuses on the skills and information you need to manage your diabetes every day. Focusing on healthy eating and medicines, the class will help you develop a personal plan to better manage life with diabetes.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension Shared Medical Appointment)

Join with other Veterans and a supportive healthcare team as you set lifestyle goals and lower your blood pressure. Meet every other week for six sessions. A variety of specialists will meet at different sessions, including a doctor, psychologist, registered nurse, pharmacist, nutritionist, and more.

Pain Management - Take Charge of Your Pain!

Coping with chronic pain can be stressful. Join with peers and health care specialists to find ways to better manage your pain. After attending the Take Charge of Your Pain! introductory class, you may wish to continue with a shared medical appointment or a Cognitive Behavior Therapy Group.

Offered in Palo Alto and San Jose sites. Talk with your Primary Care Team for a referral to be scheduled into the class.

Pain Management - Women Living Well with Chronic Pain

Are you a woman living with pain? Do you want to live better with your pain? This weekly class brings together women with chronic pain to learn, discuss and explore treatment to manage pain. Groups are held in a supportive, women-only environment.

To join, talk with your Primary Care Team for a referral to be scheduled into the class.

Tobacco Cessation - TeleQuit

Want to quit but don’t want to come in to a clinic to do it? TeleQuit is a telephone-based quit strategy that helps Veterans get Nicotine Replacement Products and telephone counseling. Call 650-493-5000 x60557 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., for consultation with the VA TeleQuit providers for Nicotine Replacement Products. Tele-Quit providers will give you a prescription for NRT from the VA for free.

Counseling for this program will be provided by phone through California Smoker’s Helpline (1-800-NO-BUTTS or 1-800-662-8887).

Weight Management – MOVE! Program

Have you struggled with your weight? Are you ready to shed the extra pounds and take charge of your health? The VA’s MOVE! Weight Management program helps overweight Veterans lose weight through healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior change. Classes focus on self-management and sustainable lifestyle changes to maintain health and wellness.

MOVE! Introduction class - held on the 1st Wednesday of every month, excluding holidays, at Palo Alto and all clinics via video teleconference. Call (855) 632-8262 or speak to a clerk at any clinic location to schedule.

Mind and Spirit

Drop-in Tai Chi

Do you currently practice Tai Chi, or would you like to try it? Tai Chi is a meditative and fluid movement exercise best known for improving balance, strength and flexibility.

Come to these drop-in groups in Monterey on Mondays at 11:15 a.m., and Fridays at 12:00 p.m. in the clinic garden. They are offered in San Jose on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in room D-107.

Yoga For Women

Yoga is the ancient practice that combines breath control, simple meditation, and specific bodily postures that are used for health and relaxation. Drop in for a Women’s Only group to try or practice.

Classes are offered weekly on Tuesdays in Palo Alto in Bldg. 5, Room A-431 at 2:00 p.m.

Chair Yoga

Have you ever been interested in yoga but don’t know if you can balance for long? Drop in for Chair Yoga! This yoga style uses chairs and other props to adapt yoga postures for all ages and abilities.

Classes are offered weekly on Mondays in all clinics via V-Tel, and at Palo Alto in person in Bldg. 4 Room C-260 at 3:00 p.m.

Eat Wisely

Healthy Eating

This is a dietitian-led class that reviews healthy nutrition choices, specifically covering the principles of a heart healthy diet, reading food labels, and general nutrition education. Class is offered at most clinic locations. See below for specific class times and locations. Speak to a scheduling clerk at any location, or call the Patient Scheduling Unit at 1-855-632-8262 and ask to be scheduled in to the Healthy Eating class at your location. You do not need a consult from your provider to attend the class.

Healthy Teaching Kitchen

Learn how to cook simple, healthy meals at home. Enjoy cooking demonstrations and take home easy recipes. Attend monthly demonstrations on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 12:30 p.m., from November through March at the Palo Alto Campus Patriot Café. From April through October, cooking demonstrations will be held on the 3rd Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Farmers Market, 3801 Miranda Ave, Palo Alto. During the year there will also be demonstrations at the community based outpatient clinics. Ask to speak with a local dietician for more information.

Palo Alto Farmers Market

Fresh fruit and vegetables come to the Palo Alto campus every Wednesday from April to November. Local growers and artisans sell a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other food items to staff and Veterans. Farmers Market hours are from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Be Active

Core Fitness

Join a dynamic fitness class to work your whole body. This is a general fitness class where instructors pace exercises to meet you at your fitness level. This class is offered twice a week at the Menlo Park Welcome Center at 4:00 p.m. Please ask your provider for a Recreational Therapy Consult for “Core Fitness”. Ready for an intense fat burning, muscle toning, and strength training program? Join a popular Cross Fit program just for Veterans. Please ask your provider for a “Cross Fit” referral for Recreational Therapy. Separate classes are offered for men and women. Enjoy the Pool

Pool Fitness can be a great way to get active without putting too much pressure on your body. There are pools located on the Palo Alto and Menlo Park campuses. Enjoy water therapy classes or open swim time. Visit our Aquatic Fitness page for specific information regarding pool usage times and classes.

Menlo Park Welcome Center

Come join us where the community and the health care system meet! The Menlo Park Wellness Center is a great source for active programs that keep Veterans connected to each other and the community. Mobility and Stretch
