Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Program

The Department of Veteran Affairs' (VA) Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Program provides vocational rehabilitation services to Veterans with a wide range of psychosocial concerns. These include mental illness, homelessness, physical impairments and any combination thereof. CWT operates under Psychology Services at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS).

Authorized in 1976 by Public Law 94-581, the CWT Program has grown substantially, with 163 CWT programs at VA Medical Centers and Community Based Outpatient Clinics nationwide reporting to Northeast Program Evaluation Center (NEPEC). In VA Central Office, the Therapeutic and Supported Employment Services office (TSES) provides national program oversight. CWT services are mandated as part of the Uniform Mental Health Services Package.

While in the program, Veterans are provided with ongoing support services, such as referrals to housing programs, resources for help with transportation, clothing and other needs, and information on how employment will affect their current benefits.

CWT is made up of five components:
