Building a Sustainable Health Care System

The VA Palo Alto Health Care System is dedicated to building a sustainable health care system. Over the years, we have collaborated with business partners on energy projects, invited sustainable non-profits to volunteer on our campus, and brought together many key players in Earth Day celebrations that bring sustainable awareness to our community.

Whether we are upgrading power features to use our energy efficiently or designing a new research building with recycled materials, building a sustainable health care system takes a team effort. Some of the major players from our health care system include:

  • The Office of Facility Planning and Development manages the design and construction of sustainable buildings and environments that enhance the health and well-being of our Veterans.
  • Engineering Service oversees the operations and maintenance of our facilities, addressing all aspects of sustainability.
  • The Green Environmental Management System (GEMS) program supports compliance with environmental and energy regulations, promotes pollution prevention, and assists in other facility-specific objectives.
  • Environmental Management Service contributes with their use of non-toxic/less-toxic cleaning products and the practice of integrated pest management.
